Welcome to Little Green Walker, a blog about raising a kid with a disability (extrapyramidal non-spastic dystonic cerebral palsy – the rare kind!) and about finding my own place in this world as a woman, mother, wife, person.
This post may disappear – or change, or something – at any time. But I didn’t want a blank site, even as I’m starting to create it. For now, this will be my intro. For now, I’m not allowing comments. For now. For now. For now.
Why am I starting a blog?
Well, this isn’t my first time with a blog – or a zine, for that matter – but it felt like it was a good time to start something a bit more formal.
I’m starting a blog because I left a full-time job to stay home with my child for one or two years, and after her diagnosis of cerebral palsy at a year, that turned into nine years.
I’m starting a blog because I am a frustrated freelancer who really wants to find a job but who has been turned away time and time again.
I’m starting a blog because I need a space to vent – anonymously – about the trials and tribulations of raising a child with a disability. I will be keeping her identity protected because the Internet is forever and also because I don’t want to interrupt her telling of her own story, which is hers to own and to share as she sees fit. But I want to share my story.
I’m starting a blog because when I was in third grade I told my teacher I wanted to be a writer when I grew up (OK, a poet – I don’t write as much poetry these days as I did in grad school), and I feel like I haven’t been staying true to myself.
I’m starting a blog to push myself out of my comfort zone and be honest.
As for why “Little Green Walker”:
My daughter’s assistive walker is literally green. I know, super creative. It caught my eye as I was brainstorming blog names and it stuck. But also….
My daughter is a “green” walker – a newbie to walking unassisted.
I will be calling my daughter Little Green, LG, or Green.
I too am a green walker, walking my way into the blogosphere for better or for worse.
I’m a perfectionist when it comes to grammar and writing. If you find a typo, feel free to tell me so I can fix it. If you find a section with which you disagree, feel free to tell me nicely here. I am flexible, changeable, I may write something on Tuesday and feel differently on Wednesday. It’s OK to disagree. But this is my space and I expect you to be respectful and play nicely in my space.
Spammers will, of course, be deleted as soon as possible. If you see a spammer sneak on in, tell me that too.
(Email me – but make sure you remove the extra stuff from the email address before you hit send.)
